Ornately Etched And Engraved 19th Century Powder Horn

[Click image for a larger version.]

20 inches in length from base to tip. Band above main portion of decorations engraved .THO : PYLE (followed by a small area of abraision), SETCH . Lower 2/3 portion of horn is ornately decorated, commencing with a huge bird (peacock or ostrich). Adjacent to the bird is a crowned woman’s figure, in fancy dress, holding a tiny globe in her left hand and a trident in her right hand, and below that a sailing ship traversing over the water. The etched inscription above the figures--very artistically done, and of the period-- declares: THE WONDRA STILL--BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES. Below the royal figure sits a lion within an ornately engraved circle, surrounded by the motto THE KING’S OWN REGIMENT . The roman numeral IV (The Kings’s Own Regiment, the 4th) is etched below the lion. A large, densely embellished crown tops the lion within the circle, completing the motif. Below the peacock (or ostrich), on the reverse side, an elephant is depicted, bearing an ornate howdah, walking over bushes, with a flowery engraving to his front. The animals’ eyes, and those of the royal person, contain tiny iron, or silver studs, within the cavities. Entire horn has a mellow greyish-tan patina throughout. A superb piece of workmanship with much historical significance.

*The 4th, King’s Own Regiment of Foot, appears in the official historical annals from a period of 1751 to 1881
