Infantry Lt. Colonel Frock Coat

I.D’d to John L. Rice (name written in upper sleeve lining), contains the more expensive and desireable triple-border Lt. Colonel’s shoulder straps,
showing honest wear. Lt. Colonel Rice also had his tailor place a watch
pocket on the outside front of the coat, a feature that is seldom found. Also includes a crimson silk waist sash, plus binder of service records and information on John L. Rice.

John L. Rice from Cornish, New Hampshire, enlisted in the union army as a private 5/21/1861. On 5/31/1861 he mustered into "A" Co. NH 2nd infantry. He was wounded and captured at Bull Run, VA, 7/21/1861, listed a P.O.W., imprisoned at Richmond, VA and paroled 1/3/1862. He was discharged for promotion on 11/18/1862. On 12/2/1862 he was commissioned into "H" Co. NH 16th Infantry as Captain. He was Mustered Out on 8/20/1863 at Concord, NH.

On 10/31/1863 he was commissioned as a Lt. Colonel into Field & Staff of the 3rd Regiment Infantry, "Corps, d’Afrique," which was previously called the "3rd regiment Louisiana Native Guards," the designation of which was changed to the "75th Regiment, U.S. colored troops" on April 4, 1864. He was Mustered Out on 11/25/1865 at New Orleans, LA.
