Karl Bodmer Aquatint

[Click image for a larger version.]

ORIGINALCOPPER ENGRAVED AQUATINT BY KARL BODMER, noted Swiss artist. Bodmer accompanied Prince Maximillian of Neuweid, in an early (1833-1834) expedition along the Upper Missouri River. Bodmer sketched the various members of the native American Indian tribes and their lifestyles, which he encountered along the way. He later had these sketches and watercolors produced in portfolio form. This aquatint is Plate 46. The three Indian figures are titled in three languages--German, French, and English. The Indian on the left is titled THE CHIEF OF THE BLOOD INDIANS. The central figure is titled WAR CHIEF OF THE PIEKANN INDIANS. The figure on the right is called KOUTANI INDIAN. Five years after this portrait was sketched, almost the entire Indian population along the Upper Missouri River was wiped out by a smallpox epidemic.
This aquatint is in sharp and excellent condition, enclosed within a tasteful burlwood frame. Overall dimensions 27-1/2 x 24 inches.
